The Battle of Polytopia Beginner’s Guide: Tips, Tricks & Strategies to Rule the World

Back in 2016, a developer by the name of Midjiwan AB released an addictive strategy game that is reminiscent of Sid Meier’s Civilization games, only a lot simpler and faster-paced. The Battle of Polytopia was composed of minimalistic and geometric graphics and set in a tile-based playing field where the objective was to conquer the whole square world or earn the most points, sometimes within a limited number of turns or time.

the battle of polytopia intro

The way the units you use are set up makes it comparable to chess where each one is unique in their roles and abilities. Whether you’re looking for a quick game (which may last 30 minutes) or a long one (several days), this strategy game is sure to fill up those empty moments of boredom for those looking for an intellectual challenge!

If you would like to learn more and maybe get even better at this game of strategy and wit, sit down and read on for we have much to say in our Beginner’s Guide to The Battle of Polytopia!

For the purpose of this guide, we will not be discussing special tribes and their special units. We will only be focusing on the base game and the regular tribes.

1. Customize Your Game

Before you start the game, you are given options to customize it however you like. You can play it as single-player or multiplayer:

Single-Player Mode

the battle of polytopia singleplayer mode

In Single-player mode, you can set the number of opponents from 1 to 11 (15 if you’ve unlocked all tribes) with difficulty ranging from Easy to Crazy. You can also choose which tribes to disable so you won’t have to face them in battle. You can do this by selecting the tribe and clicking on disable at the upper right side of the window.

the battle of polytopia disable

Note that if the number of opponents you have set is more than the amount of enabled tribes, the computer will repeat certain tribes and present them in a different color.

Perfection

This game mode limits you and your opponents to 30 turns. You have to make the most out of each move and excel in a short span of time. This is the perfect game mode for players who have limited time or just want to try out the game or a new tribe they haven’t used yet. The size of the map is fixed at 256 tiles.

Dominion

This game mode lets you play with unlimited turns until there is only one tribe left in the square. The size of the map is dependent on how many opponents you have:

121 tiles = 1 opponent

196 tiles = 2 opponents

256 tiles = 3 opponents

324 tiles = 4-15 opponents

Creative

the battle of polytopia creative

This game mode offers the most customization options. It lets you choose between Perfection, Domination, or Infinity (the game does not stop until you end it.) Unlike the other two modes, this mode lets you choose the map type and map size:

• Map Type

Drylands – No water. Fishing technology has no use in this map unless there are Kickoo or Aquarion. These are the only two tribes whose terrains will include water tiles.

Lakes – Every tribe spawns with connections to at least two villages. Land will always generate on the edges of the map

Continents – Every tribe spawns with connections to at least two villages. Land is large but separated.

Archipelago – Almost every city is close to the water. Land is irregular.

Water World – Mostly water with small islands. The Kickoo and Aquarion have a big advantage in this world.

• Map Size

Tiny – 121 tiles, 8 max opponents

Small – 196 tiles

Normal – 256 tiles

Large – 324 tiles

Huge – 400 tiles

Massive – 900 tiles

Multiplayer Mode

the battle of polytopia multiplayer mode

Polytopia allows cross-play which means that players on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and other Mac operating systems can play with each other. Unlike Single-player mode, you can have several ongoing games in multiplayer mode.

New Game

When creating a new game, there are several options you can choose for your settings:

  • Network – you can choose between playing Online (playing with friends online) or Pass & Play (playing locally and taking turns)
  • Game Mode – you can choose between Glory (first to reach a set number of points from 5,000 to 25,000) or Might (first to capture all capitals)
  • Map Type and Size – similar to the options mentioned in Single-player, Creative Mode
  • Turn Time Limit – you can choose between playing a Live Game (playing with a time bank), 24 hours, or 7 days. The second and third options are best for players who are busy and can only play every now and then or games that take a long time to complete.

Random Match

This lets you connect to a random player on the internet based on your specified settings. Unlike when you’re creating your own game, you can only choose the Turn Time Limit (which is only Live Game or 24 hours), Game Mode, and number of Players (2 to 9). The advanced settings also allow you to choose Map Type and Size.

Tournaments

the battle of polytopia tournaments

This lets you sign up for scheduled tournaments. These events typically have 16-100 slots that can be joined by anyone with a connected Challengermode account. Most of these tournaments are held as Single Elimination 1v1 battles with Semis and Finals having the best of 3. You can check each Tournament’s info by clicking them and clicking more info.

2. Learn What Each Unit Can Do

Each unit has its own strengths and weaknesses, and once you learn what they are, it would be easier for you to conduct your strategies in the field. All regular tribes share the same units.

Land Units

Warrior

the battle of polytopia warrior

Health: 10

Attack: 2

Defense: 2

Movement: 1

Range: 1

Veteran: Yes

Skills: Dash, Fortify

The Warrior is the cheapest unit in the game, only costing 2 Stars, and has no technology to summon. Among all 12 regular tribes, Xin-xi, Imperius, Bardur, Kickoo, Luxidoor, Zebasi, Ai-Mo, and Yădakk start with this unit. It has a higher attack than a Defender and higher defense than a Rider and an Archer, making it an all-around balanced beginning class.

Among all the units, they’re the best to use when you are defending yourself from early enemy attacks and have not expanded or collected enough resources to upgrade your city yet. However, because of their low Movement, they are not the best units for exploring the area. Aside from this, their low health makes them a bad choice as naval units.

Their Dash ability makes them more mobile than other units, letting them attack after moving, making them good for reaching out to enemies that are 1 square away. Their Fortify ability gives them a defense boost if they’re within their city’s boundaries, making them very useful in defending the capital in the early stages of the game.

Fighting enemy Warriors is not very difficult and they can often be killed with 1-2 attacks. Attacking them with ranged units will prevent them from retaliating.

Rider

the battle of polytopia rider

Health: 10

Attack: 2

Defense: 1

Movement: 2

Range: 1

Veteran: Yes

Skills: Dash, Fortify, Escape

The Rider costs 3 Stars and the Riding technology to summon. Since Riding is a Tier 1 technology, it is fairly easy to unlock at the start. If you are playing as the Oumaji, you have this unlocked automatically and start the game with this unit. It has the same attack and defense as an Archer but has more movement and less range. They are the best units for uncovering hidden areas and getting to unclaimed villages and ruins quickly at the start. When playing on a large map, they are a must-have in your army. However, their low defense makes them very easy to kill. For that same reason, they are a bad choice as naval units.

Their Dash ability, combined with their Escape ability, makes them extra mobile, allowing you to move, attack, then move again in the same turn. This skill is especially useful in situations where an enemy retaliates their attack, making them close to death. Escaping 2 squares away gives them a chance to survive. Escaping inside your cities’ boundaries will give them an even bigger survival chance because of their Fortify ability which gives them a defense boost there. If there are roads on the ground, they can move even further, but only the ones in your territory.

If paired with a Mind Bender, a unit that can heal, they could attack, escape to safety, then get healed. Since Mind Benders can heal every unit within a 3×3 area, you could do a lot of damage with Riders and survive with this trick.

Enemy Riders are a lot easier to get rid of if you have an army of long-ranged units. Melee units may have a harder time unless they have the Dash ability.

Archer

the battle of polytopia archer

Health: 10

Attack: 2

Defense: 1

Movement: 1

Range: 2

Veteran: Yes

Skills: Dash, Fortify

The Archer costs 3 Stars and the Archery technology to summon. Archery is a Tier 2 technology so you will need to unlock Hunting first. If you are playing as the Hoodrick, you’ll have this technology unlocked automatically and have an Archer as a starting unit. It has the same attack and defense as a Rider but with more range and less movement. They are good units for attacking far-away enemies and can serve as back-end army support for melee units. Due to their low health and defense, they are not a good choice as naval units.

These units are very mobile and make very good snipers, having the ability to Dash and attack. This combination makes them effective against Catapults and Giants. They’ll be able to ignore units in front of Catapults with their range and they could prevent Giants from attacking them by moving away before attacking. Their Fortify ability gives them an extra layer of defense but can be easily killed outside the city’s borders.

Since they have low defense, they must be paired with Defenders, Giants, or any of the other melee units with more defense except for Riders. They cannot survive traveling alone and are not good options for naval units.

Unlike melee units, long-ranged units can retaliate against an Archer’s attacks. Naval units like Battleships will be able to knock enemy Archers out quickly. Daggers can also be useful against them since they cannot retaliate against their surprise attacks.

Defender

the battle of polytopia defender

Health: 15

Attack: 1

Defense: 3

Movement: 1

Range: 1

Veteran: Yes

Skills: Fortify

The Defender costs 3 Stars and the Strategy technology to summon. Strategy is a Tier 2 technology so you will need to unlock Organization first. If you are playing as the Quetzali, you’ll have Strategy unlocked automatically and have a Defender as a starting unit. Organization, however, is not unlocked. Their high defense and health make them the best units to utilize during an invasion to defend your city. While they cannot deal much damage when they attack an enemy, they can dish out a lot of damage when countering enemies who attack them.

These units’ Fortify skill gives them a defense boost within your cities’ boundaries. If you place city walls on your city once they’ve been upgraded, they’ll be nearly indestructible.

Since Defenders have high health, they are ideal for naval units. Their main weaknesses are ranged units since they cannot Dash and attack like other melee units. They may also have trouble dealing with mobs by themselves. Mind Benders are also effective, converting these units to their side when they’re nearby.

Avoid using melee units when trying to kill an enemy Defender. Use your Archers, Catapults, or Battleships to avoid their fatal counterattacks while whittling down their HP.

Swordsman

the battle of polytopia swordsman

Health: 15

Attack: 3

Defense: 3

Movement: 1

Range: 1

Veteran: Yes

Skills: Dash, Fortify

The Swordsman costs 5 Stars and the Smithery technology to summon. Smithery is a Tier 3 technology so you will need to unlock Climbing and Mining first. If you are playing as the Vengir, you’ll have Smithery unlocked automatically and have a Swordsman as a starting unit. Climbing and Mining, however, are not unlocked. This unit functions similarly to a Warrior, having both Dash and Fortify but has more health, attack, and defense. They have the same defense as a Defender and almost the same attack as a Knight, making them an all-around balanced unit that can be utilized in many situations. They also make for good naval units.

This unit usually leads the army on the front lines. They are very good at killing off most melee units but struggle with long-ranged attackers. They’re very effective against Knights who may have higher damage but have lower defense than they do. However, they are weak against Defenders who have high defense and retaliation damage.

Enemy Swordsmen are tricky to fight since they have higher defense and attack than most units. Fighting them with Giants or long-ranged units is a good way to get rid of them without losing too many units. Alternatively, you could utilize the Convert ability of a Mind Bender to make them switch over to your side instead.

Cloak

the battle of polytopia cloak

Health: 5

Attack: 0

Defense: 0.5

Movement: 2

Range: 1

Veteran: No

Skills: Hide, Sneak, Infiltrate, Dash, Scout

The Cloak costs 8 Stars and the Diplomacy technology to summon. Diplomacy is a Tier 3 technology so you will need to unlock Organization and Strategy first. This unit is mostly used to infiltrate enemy cities but has very low health and defense and cannot attack normally like other units. The only time they deal damage is during an infiltration. They also cannot become Veterans.

Their Hide ability makes them invisible to enemies. Their Sneak and Creep abilities let them ignore movement barriers imposed by enemies and terrain respectively. Pair this together with Dash, which lets them attack after moving, and Infiltrate, which allows them to incite a revolt, making them a terrifying assassin.

Infiltrations will spawn Daggers or Pirates (naval versions of Daggers) around the city based on the city’s level. The higher their level, the more Daggers will spawn. The maximum number of Daggers or Pirates that can spawn is 5. An infiltration will only take effect if there is a unit to be targeted in the city. This does not work if the unit is not the current owner of the city or if you are in a peace treaty with the unit.

Other than infiltration, Cloaks make for good units for exploring hidden areas as their Scout ability lets them explore a 5×5 area instead of a 3×3 area. As a naval unit, they turn into Dinghies instead of Boats and cannot be upgraded. These Dinghies retain all of the abilities of Cloaks but cannot deal ranged attacks like Boats.

Never place your Cloaks in a tile where your enemy is most likely to step on. This will undoubtedly reveal your Cloak. An example of this is when your enemy is surrounded and there’s only one tile left for them to walk on. If you put your Cloak there, your enemy would click on it thinking it is empty, and will accidentally reveal it.

Enemy Cloaks are easy to kill with one hit but difficult to find because of their Hide and Sneak skills. One way you can try to find them before they get to your city is to tap into the empty spaces surrounding your city. Doing so will reveal any hidden Cloaks. Most units can easily kill them once revealed. Having a Mind Bender next to the city is also helpful as they will be able to detect any Cloaks lurking near them.

Dagger

the battle of polytopia dagger

Health: 10

Attack: 2

Defense: 2

Movement: 1

Range: 1

Veteran: No

Skills: Dash, Surprise, Independent

The Dagger is a unique unit that can only be summoned through a Cloak’s infiltration ability. They have the same stats as Warriors but cannot become Veterans. They can spawn on land or in water as Pirates. As a naval unit, Pirates retain all abilities of a Dagger but cannot be upgraded like Boats. Daggers cannot spawn in any terrain that the player has not unlocked movement to yet such as Climbing for mountains or Sailing and Navigation for water.

Daggers are great against enemies with high attacks since their Surprise ability lets them attack without retaliation. This makes them last longer in battle despite only having 10 health. Their Dash ability also makes them effective at reaching enemies 1 square away. They are also Independent units which means they do not take up any Population slots in any of your cities. If you have enough Cloaks infiltrating cities, you can potentially have an army of Daggers.

Since Enemy Daggers have just the same stats as a Warrior, they are just as easy to eliminate and can be killed with usually 1-2 attacks.

Mind Bender

the battle of polytopia mind bender

Health: 10

Attack: 0

Defense: 1

Movement: 1

Range: 1

Veteran: Yes

Skills: Heal, Convert, Detect

The Mind Bender costs 5 Stars and the Philosophy technology to summon. Philosophy is a Tier 3 technology so you will need to unlock Climbing and Meditation first. They are mainly a support unit and should not be your top priority when building your army at first. They are also not a good choice as naval units.

Alone, this unit could die quickly since it has low defense and low health. They do better as a group, with multiple fellow Mind Benders or with a low-health unit such as Warriors in front of them. Since they do not have Dash like other units, this is one of the only ways they could trick their enemies to come close to them so they can Convert them into their tribe. Converted units can go over the Population unit limit.

Aside from conversion, they also have a Healing ability which lets them heal other allies around them in a 3×3 area. This makes them an ideal unit to place behind high-attack or defense melee units like Defenders, Swordsmen, and Knights. If your tribe is still hidden from other tribes though, once you heal, they would be able to have a clue where you are.

Their Detect ability is also useful in spotting hidden enemies, like Cloaks, around them. If placed next to a city, they could reveal Cloaks when they approach and can convert invaders when they enter the city.

Enemy Mind Benders can easily be killed by most units, especially ranged units and Knights. We highly recommend killing them on sight in order to prevent your units from getting converted to the other side.

Catapult

the battle of polytopia catapult

Health: 10

Attack: 4

Defense: 0

Movement: 1

Range: 3

Veteran: Yes

Skills: None

The Catapult costs 8 Stars and the Mathematics technology to summon. Mathematics is a Tier 3 technology so you will need to unlock Hunting and Forestry first. Of all land units, this one has the most powerful attack and the longest range. They excel in eliminating enemies, especially super units and naval units, and make capturing cities a lot easier.

In exchange for that power, they have no defense and skills and have low movement. To protect them from threats, you need to surround them with Defenders and other units. You can also take advantage of terrains such as mountains and forests since these can prevent units from moving through them in the same turn, even if you have Climbing technology. Keeping them in your city and having a city wall also helps in keeping them alive. However, before you do that, we recommend using up the Population slots in that city before keeping the Catapult there.

When dealing with enemy Catapults, use Archers, Riders, Knights, or your own catapults to eliminate them. The sooner you kill them off, the better since they can easily one-shot your low-health and defense units.

Knight

the battle of polytopia knight

Health: 10

Attack: 3.5

Defense: 1

Movement: 3

Range: 1

Veteran: Yes

Skills: None

The Knight costs 8 Stars and the Chivalry technology to summon. Chivalry is a Tier 3 technology so you will need to unlock Riding and Free Spirit first. While it rides a mount like a Rider, its function is closer to that of a Swordsman but with less attack and defense and more movement.

Of all units, it has the most movement and can easily Dash toward far-away enemies and attack them. What makes them especially monstrous is their Persist ability, which gives them an extra attack right after killing an enemy. They can keep killing enemies and will only stop when they attack an enemy that does not die. This makes them especially useful when dealing with multiple units with low health or defense, especially Catapults, and Riders.

While defense may be their weak point, having them within your cities’ borders will Fortify them, giving them a defense boost. Because of their low health, they are not a good choice as a naval unit.

Giant

the battle of polytopia giant

Health: 40

Attack: 5

Defense: 4

Movement: 1

Range: 1

Veteran: No

Skills: None

The Giant is a super unit that can only be summoned by upgrading your city to level 5 or above. It will come up as a reward option as an alternative to the Park. Despite having no skills, their high Attack and Defense make them hard to kill and serve as a great unit to have for defending and capturing cities. It is also possible to summon the Giant during a siege by upgrading your city to push the enemy outside. They also make the best naval units out of all the regular units, especially since they can move farther than when they were land units.

However, this unit is not without its flaws. This unit is weak against all Ranged units and mobs of Knights and Swordsmen. Having an enemy Mind Bender could also convert your Giant to their side without warning.

Naval Units

Boat

the battle of polytopia boat

Health: based on land unit’s Health

Attack: 1

Defense: 1

Movement: 1

Range: 2

Veteran: No

Skills: Float, Carry, Dash

Ship

the battle of polytopia ship

Health: based on land unit’s Health

Attack: 2

Defense: 2

Movement: 3

Range: 2

Veteran: No

Skills: Float, Carry, Dash

Battleship

the battle of polytopia battleship

Health: based on land unit’s Health

Attack: 4

Defense: 3

Movement: 3

Range: 2

Veteran: No

Skills: Float, Carry, Dash, Scout

The Boat is the naval unit that most land units default to once they walk toward a port. The only exception to this is the Cloak and Dagger which has its own naval units. Its health is dependent on the health of the land unit but every other stat will be the same all throughout. It requires the Sailing ability to summon and needs the Navigation ability to pass through dark blue tiles.

These units have the ability to Float on water and Carry a land unit inside. It releases the unit once it reaches land again. Its Dash ability is also useful for positioning itself before they fire toward an enemy.  It’s always advisable to fire when they’re at least one square away from a melee unit so they will not retaliate. However, ranged units will always retaliate when they are hit.

Boats can be upgraded to Ships for the cost of 5 Stars and have more attack, defense, and movement. Ships can be upgraded to Battleships for the cost of 15 Stars and have more attack and defense. Battleships also have an added Scout ability which lets them explore a 5×5 area. Both of these upgrades would be lost once the unit moves onto land. We recommend only placing an upgraded ship back on land if you are trying to capture a city.

While naval units have the advantage of movement and attack range, their downside is the cost of their upgrade. Boats by themselves do very little damage and upgrading it all the way to a Battleship will cost 20 Stars all in all. Unless you’re making a lot of Stars each turn, it is not cost-efficient.

Enemy Boats, Ships, or Battleships can be countered with the same units or with Catapults. Destroy them as soon as possible since they could wipe out many of your units if left unchecked.

Dinghy

the battle of polytopia dinghy

Health: 5

Attack: 0

Defense: 0.5

Movement: 2

Range: 1

Veteran: No

Skills: Carry, Float, Hide, Sneak, Infiltrate, Dash

The Dinghy is the naval unit equivalent of a Cloak. They retain all of the stats and skills of a Cloak (except for Scout) but can move on water. Dinghies are very useful in capturing cities on islands or near water, especially since they are not detected as easily. Unlike Boats, they cannot be upgraded.

Like Cloaks, enemy Dinghies can easily be killed by most units. Since they are in the water, get long-ranged units to snipe them.

Pirate

the battle of polytopia pirate

Health: 10

Attack: 2

Defense: 2

Movement: 1

Range: 1

Veteran: No

Skills: Carry, Float, Dash, Surprise, Independent

The Pirate is the naval unit equivalent of a Dagger. They retain all of the stats and skills of a Dagger but can move on water. This unit can be effective in clearing out powerful Battleships since their Surprise ability will prevent them from retaliating. Unlike Boats, they cannot be upgraded.

Enemy Pirates can be easily dealt with and are not an immediate danger. Snipe them with long-ranged units to get rid of them.

3. Invest in Technology

the battle of polytopia technology

Technology is one of the most important aspects of the game. The cost of unlocking a tier increases as the number of cities you capture increases. Choosing the right technology at the right time and situation is vital to your army’s survival and the outcome of your skirmish. There are five main technology trees, each with two branches: Riding, Organization, Climbing, Fishing, and Hunting.

Riding

the battle of polytopia riding

Riding unlocks the Rider unit. This is the first tier in the Riding technology tree and branches off to Roads, which branches to Trade, and Free Spirit, which branches to Chivalry. When using the Oumaji Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Roads & Trade

This branch of Riding is more focused on the improvement of your city, increased movement, and increased production of Stars.

Roads unlock the ability to pave roads that can connect cities to one another. Roads can increase the movement of your units as they walk along them. However, this movement boost does not take effect on enemy roads.

This tier also unlocks the Network task which will reward you with a Grand Bazaar monument after you’ve connected five cities to the capital. You can also connect cities by placing ports next to them if they are close to the water. These ports will automatically connect to other ports and roads adjacent to them. When using the Yădakk Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Trade can be unlocked after Roads and unlocks the ability to build a Customs House. This structure produces 2 Stars for each nearby port for each turn. Only 1 Customs House can be built per city and must be next to a Port. This tier also unlocks the Wealth Task which rewards you with an Emperor’s Tomb once you gather 100 Stars.

Free Spirit & Chivalry

This branch of Riding is more focused on increasing Population and score, removing units and forests, and unlocking the Knight unit.

Free Spirit unlocks the ability to build Temples, producing 1 Population and 100 points of score. The Temple grows every 3 turns, increasing its point value by 50. This tier also unlocks the ability to Disband or remove your units and get half of its cost in return. This is especially helpful for getting rid of low-health units and replacing them with new ones.

Chivalry unlocks the Knight unit and the ability to burn forests. Burning a forest transforms the tile into a field with crops that can be turned into a farm with Farming technology. These farms can also increase the Population.

Organization

the battle of polytopia organization

Organization unlocks the ability to harvest fruit within your borders which produces 1 Population. This is the first Tier in the Organization technology tree and branches off to Farming, which branches off to Construction, and Strategy, which branches off to Diplomacy. When using the Imperius Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Farming & Construction

This branch of Organization is focused on increasing your Population, destroying buildings, and beautifying your cities with farms and windmills.

Farming unlocks the ability to turn tiles with crops within your borders into farms that produce 2 Population. When using the Zebasi Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Construction unlocks the ability to create Windmills which complements the previous technology, producing 1 Population for each nearby Farm. Only 1 Windmill can be built per city and must be next to a farm. This tier also unlocks the ability to destroy buildings within your borders for reconstructing your cities.

Strategy & Diplomacy

This branch of Organization is focused on unlocking Defenders and Cloaks and establishing peaceful and beneficial agreements with other tribes.

Strategy unlocks the Defender unit and the ability to offer Peace Treaties with other tribes. You can offer these treaties by going to the Tribe Info screen and selecting a tribe to open up the menu.

This menu can also show you what other tribes think of you, with the green descriptions referring to positive opinions and the red descriptions referring to negative opinions. The more positive their opinion, the higher the chances of the tribe accepting your treaty. When using the Quetzali Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Diplomacy unlocks the Cloak unit and the ability to see the capitals of all tribes you’ve already encountered. This tier also unlocks the ability to construct Embassies in the capitals of other tribes. These Embassies provide extra income for both parties and are doubled once you establish a peace treaty. The Embassy is destroyed once one of the tribes attacks the other. Building Embassies is a good way to deter enemies from attacking you at the start.

Climbing

the battle of polytopia climbing

Climbing unlocks the ability to move on mountain formations and gives your units a defense bonus while they are there. It is only when this technology is unlocked that you will be able to see the location of ores on the map. This is the first Tier in the Climbing technology tree and branches off to Mining, which branches off to Smithery, and Meditation, which branches off to Philosophy. When using the Xin-xi Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Mining & Smithery

This branch of Climbing is focused on increasing Population and unlocking the Swordsman unit.

Mining unlocks the ability to mine ores on mountains with ores, producing 2 Population.

Smithery unlocks the Swordsman unit and the ability to build Forges. This tier complements the previous tier and can produce 2 Population for each nearby Mine. Only 1 Forge can be built per city and must be built next to a mine. When using the Vengir Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Meditation & Philosophy

This branch of Climbing is focused on increasingPopulation and points and unlocking the Mind Bender unit.

Meditation unlocks the ability to construct Mountain Temples on mountains, producing 1 Population and 100 points. The Mountain Temple grows every 3 turns, increasing its point value by 50. This tier also unlocks the Pacifist task which rewards you with an Altar of Peace upon making no attacks for 5 turns. Mind Bender conversions are considered attacks. When using the Ai-Mo Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Philosophy unlocks the Mind Bender unit and the benefit of having the price of all technologies reduced by 33%. This tier also unlocks the Genius task which rewards you with the Tower of Wisdom upon unlocking all available technologies.

Fishing

the battle of polytopia fishing

Fishing unlocks the ability to collect fish from the water tiles with fish in them, producing 1 Population. This is the first Tier in the Fishing technology tree and branches off to Sailing, which branches off to Navigation, and Whaling, which branches off to Aquatism. When using the Kickoo Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start. This technology is without a doubt the most important one of all, especially in maps with lots of water. However, if you are playing in a Dryland map, skip this altogether.

Sailing & Navigation

This branch of Fishing is focused on travel and exploration on water, unlocking naval units, and opening trade routes on water.

Sailing unlocks the ability to turn your land units into naval units such as Boats (which can be upgraded to Ships), Dinghies, and Pirates and move along light blue colored water tiles. It also unlocks the ability to construct Ports, which produces 2 Population. These ports can serve as an alternative to roads for cities near water.

Navigation unlocks the ability to upgrade your Ships into Battleships and move along dark blue colored ocean tiles. It also unlocks the Explorer task which rewards you with an Eye of God once you explore every tile in the square world.

Whaling & Aquatism

This branch of Fishing is focused on producing Stars, Population, and points as well as boosting naval units’ defense.

Whaling unlocks the ability to hunt whales which produce 10 Stars. You don’t have to move your unit to a whale to harvest them, but the whale must be within your city’s borders.

Aquatism unlocks the ability to construct Water Temples, producing 1 Population and 100 points of score. The Mountain Temple grows every 3 turns, increasing its point value by 50. This tier also gives your unit a defense boost when in water or the ocean, a bonus that would only be useful if you’ve unlocked Sailing and Navigation.

Hunting

the battle of polytopia hunting

Hunting unlocks the ability to hunt animals in land tiles with wild animals on them, producing 1 Population. This is the first Tier in the Hunting technology tree and branches off to Archery, which branches off to Spiritualism, and Forestry, which branches off to Mathematics.

When using the Bardur Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Archery & Spiritualism

This branch of Hunting is focused on growing forests, producing Population and points, boosting defenses in the forest, and unlocking the Archer unit.

Archery unlocks the Archer unit and a defense boost to units defending in the Forest. When using the Hoodrick Tribe, this technology is unlocked from the start.

Spiritualism unlocks the ability to transform fields into forests and construct Forest Temples, producing 1 Population and 100 points. The Forest Temple grows every 3 turns, increasing its point value by 50.

Forestry & Mathematics

This branch of Hunting is focused on clearing forests, producing Population and Stars along with unlocking the Catapult unit.

Forestry unlocks the ability to construct Lumber Huts which produce 1 Population. This tier also unlocks the ability to clear forests and turn them into fields, producing 1 Star.

Mathematics unlocks the Catapult unit and the ability to construct Sawmills, producing 1 Population for each Lumber Hut. Only 1 Sawmill can be built per city and must be next to a Lumber Hut.

4. Spend Stars Wisely

Stars are a valuable resource. These are naturally replenished each turn but are not unlimited. Below are a few tips to help you conserve your resources:

Focus on 1-2 Technology Trees at a time

the battle of polytopia focus

We highly recommend focusing on 1-2 technology trees at a time to make the most out of each one. Investing in several Tier 1 technologies at the start won’t help you much and will prevent you from investing Stars in more advanced tiers. This is because the more you unlock and the more cities you capture, the more expensive each technology will cost. If you don’t have any embassies or treaties established with other tribes, you will have a hard time gaining enough Stars to purchase them.

If you want to unlock as many technologies as you can quickly, one option you can do is to unlock the Philosophy technology as soon as you can so that you can get a 33% discount on them as well as the Genius task. This task will reward you with a Tower of Wisdom upon discovering all technologies and can increase your Population.

Disband Weak Units

the battle of polytopia disband

Every time one of your units is killed, a small chunk of your score is deducted. Sometimes it is necessary to advance your progress in killing a unit or to free up a Population slot in your city. Once you have the Free Spirit technology (Tier 2 of the Riding technology branch), you will have the ability to Disband units. While Disbanding units still deduct a bit of your score, albeit a smaller chunk, you get half of the Stars you used to create that unit. It is a good way to keep your army in good shape without losing too many resources and points.

5. Know the Advantages and Disadvantages of Each Tribe

While all regular tribes use the same units and technology map, they differ in their starting technology, starting unit, and the natural resources of their land. Utilizing their benefits and learning what they lack will help you know what strategies to use and which tribe works best for you.

6. Upgrade Your Cities

Upgrading your cities is as important as upgrading your units. Below are a few tips that can ensure that your cities are upgraded in the most efficient way possible:

Unlock Monuments

Monuments are rewards for tasks that are unlocked while playing the game. These Monuments significantly boost your Population and points. Their designs vary per tribe and they can only be built once per game. All Monuments produce 3 Population and 400 points.

Altar of Peace

the battle of polytopia altar of peace

Task Name: Pacifist

Unlocked by: Unlocking Meditation technology

Task: Make no attacks for 5 turns

Any attacks done in retaliation (counterattacks) are not considered an “attack”. However, converting an enemy with a Mind Bender is.

Emperor’s Tomb

the battle of polytopia emperor's tomb

Task Name: Wealth

Unlocked by: Unlocking Trade technology

Task: Accumulate 100 Stars

These 100 Stars you have to gain must be gained after unlocking the task. Stars you spend will not count.

Eye of God

the battle of polytopia eye of god

Task Name: Explorer

Unlocked by: Unlocking Navigation technology

Task: Explore every tile

This task only requires you to uncover the tiles underneath the clouds but does not require you to actually step on each tile.

Gate of Power

the battle of polytopia gate of power

Task Name: Killer

Unlocked by: Killing an enemy unit

Task: Kill 10 enemy units

This is one of the easier tasks to accomplish and can be unlocked early in the game. One thing to note is that converting units with a Mind Bender is not considered a kill.

Grand Bazaar

the battle of polytopia grand bazaar

Task Name: Network

Unlocked by: Unlocking Roads technology

Task: Connect 5 cities to the capital

While the Roads technology is required for this task to be unlocked, you can also connect cities by building Ports next to cities close to the water. These ports will connect as long as they are somewhat parallel or in view of another port.

Park of Fortune

the battle of polytopia park of fortune

Task Name: Metropolis

Unlocked by: Getting a level 2 city

Task: Get a level 5 city

This task can be achieved by upgrading your city to level 5 or capturing an already level 5 city.

Tower of Wisdom

the battle of polytopia tower of wisdom

Task Name: Genius

Unlocked by: Unlocking Philosophy technology

Task: Research all technologies

While you have to research all technologies, it is not required for you to utilize each one in your game.

Choose the Right City Upgrade Rewards

For every upgrade of each city, a reward can be earned. You will always have a choice between two options but choosing the right one in the right situation can make a big difference. Each upgrade earns you 50 points and increases your income by 1 Star.

Level 2

the battle of polytopia level 2

Reward Options:

  • Workshop
  • Explorer

Workshop gives you an extra Star earned per turn while Explorer reveals a portion of the map to you.

Workshop gives you a long-term benefit and can help you build up your army or city faster with the extra Star. This one extra Star is useful in the first few turns when you haven’t captured any villages yet. For each city you upgrade to level 2, you can get an extra Star if you decide to choose Workshop each time which will be beneficial in buying technology and expensive units like Battleships. However, we do not recommend taking this reward if you can already accumulate more than 100 Stars per turn since the alternative choice may benefit you more.

Explorer gives you the initial advantage of knowing where the nearby ruins and villages are. This can help you get to them faster than any of the other tribes you’re competing with. It can also let you discover tribes quickly, giving you Stars for when you do. It can also help you with your Explorer task to obtain the Eye of God monument. However, we do not recommend taking this reward if the city you got this from has most of the surrounding area already uncovered.

Level 3

the battle of polytopia level 3

Reward Options:

  • City Wall
  • Resources (5 Stars)

City Wall provides a defense bonus to your units with the Fortify skill when placed inside the city while Resources gives you 5 Stars.

City Wall is all-around the better option between the two choices. Resources, while helpful in a pinch, are only a short-term benefit while City Wall will protect your city until the end of the game. The only time you would ever want to choose Resources instead is if you desperately need to use it to buy units to protect a city that is unmanned.

Level 4

the battle of polytopia level 4

Reward Options:

  • Population Growth (3 Population)
  • Border Growth

Population Growth gives your city 3 Population while Border Growth increases the size of your city’s border.

In many cases, Border Growth is what we recommend prioritizing over Population Growth since the latter can easily be gained by building something near the city unlike the former. Increasing Border Growth will also allow you to harvest certain resources that were previously outside your border. One instance where we would not recommend this option is when there are other cities, especially enemy cities, close by that could interfere with this growth.

You might end up only having a small growth in a portion of the map. Another instance would be when there are no useful resources close by and your goal is to reach a certain number of points to win. By choosing Population Growth, it would be easier for your city to upgrade to level 5 to get more points or get a Super Unit.

Level 5+

the battle of polytopia level 5

Reward Options:

  • Park
  • Super Unit

Park builds a Park in your city and gives you 250 points while Super Unit gives you a Giant unit.

The best option largely depends on the goal of your game and where you currently stand. If you need help defending your city or capturing cities, opting for the Super Unit is the best option. However, if you’re doing well with your current units and need more help boosting your points, choosing Park is the better option.

The best part about this is that you can choose both options at different points. Every upgrade after level 5 will only give you these options so you can choose Park then Super Unit later or vice versa. You can also get multiple Parks or Super Units if you prefer.

7. Protect Your City From Invaders

There will no doubt be multiple invaders trying to capture your city, especially if there are many tribes involved. Below are a few tips to protect your territories:

Look for Aesthetic Changes in the Terrain

the battle of polytopia changes

Pay attention to any aesthetic changes to the land you’re walking on. If you notice that the ground has changed color or any of the mountains, trees, or fruit look different, it means that another tribe is nearby. Ready up your units in case they appear and start attacking.

Terrains can Stop Movement

the battle of polytopia stop movement

Entering Ports will turn your units into naval units but you will have to wait for the next turn before you can move them. Passing Forests without Roads and Mountains (even with Climbing) will always stop your unit from moving past it. With this in mind, you can structure your cities’ surroundings with Forests on the empty spaces to prevent enemies from passing through easily. You can still place roads since only you can take advantage of the roads in your territory. Forests and Mountains can also affect attack range. You also cannot go past fog until you reveal what’s beneath it.

Always Have a Guard in or Next to Your City

the battle of polytopia guard

Never leave your city unattended. We recommend having a few Swordsmen, Defenders, or Giants somewhere close to your city so they can step up and eliminate any looming threats. Alternatively, you can place Mind Benders next to cities to convert any enemy that enters them.

Since they have low defense and health, you can place them in mountains or forests (if you have Forestry technology) to give them an extra layer of defense. That way, they won’t die too easily. Having more than 1 Mind Bender could also help. If your enemy has Knights, place them 1 tile away from each other to prevent their Persist ability from killing them all in 1 turn.

Upgrade to Push Units off Your CIty

the battle of polytopia push units

One way to protect your city from being captured, especially if there are no units nearby that can kill the intruder, is by upgrading your city to level 5 or above. This way, you will have the option to summon a Giant and when you do, the unit that is currently in your city will be pushed aside.

However, if your city is currently level 2, do not try and upgrade it to level 3. When you do and you choose City Wall as a reward, it would be a lot harder to take your city back because your enemy will be protected.

8. Avoid Unnecessary Battles

Getting into a skirmish too soon can lead to the early downfall of your city. Below are a few tips that can keep you away from danger:

Do not Strike if You’re not Ready

the battle of polytopia don't strike

Don’t make the first move if you are not ready to fight yet. Not all enemies you see are guaranteed to attack when they see you. If they don’t see you as a threat, they are more likely to avoid you and focus on other tribes that may attack them.

Establish Peace Treaties and Embassies

the battle of polytopia peace

This tip works best when you are playing against multiple tribes. At the start, you may need some time to just build up your city and army. If other tribes start attacking immediately, you might not be able to defend yourself properly, especially if you don’t have a Defender.

To prevent them from attacking, you can establish Peace Treaties as soon as you discover the tribe. You’ll have a higher chance of the treaty getting accepted if you haven’t attacked them or if they haven’t formed an opinion about you. That chance gets even higher if you’ve constructed an Embassy in their capital.

If a tribe rejects your Peace Treaty, you can still establish an Embassy. The Embassy will let both you and the other tribe earn extra Stars which is enough reason for them to think twice about attacking you. A Peace Treaty is not required for an Embassy and vice versa. However, you will earn twice as many Stars if you have both.

Prepare Before Breaking Peace Treaties

the battle of polytopia break treaty

We recommend making as many units as you can before attempting to challenge your former ally. Don’t break a Peace Treaty while your units are still in the enemy’s space. Any ally you had that is within the other tribe’s place will disappear so make sure to move away your strongest and most important ones first.

Not all Enemies Have to be Killed to Capture a City

the battle of polytopia capture

You may find yourself overwhelmed by the sheer number of units your enemy tribe has. However, once you capture all cities of a tribe, all their remaining units will immediately disappear.

Not all Units Have to Move

the battle of polytopia unmoved

The more units you have, the harder it is to track which units have not moved. If you have hints turned on, they will mark unmoved units with a pink heart to help you out. However, not all units need to be moved or ordered to attack per turn. All unmoved units will, by default, recover their health.

9. Strike at the Right Moment

There will be some instances where attacking could be the best course of action or the worst one. Below are some tips that can help you determine this:

Check Before you Attack

the battle of polytopia before attack

When your unit is within the attacking range of an enemy unit, those units will have red circles underneath them. You can tell which ones would be killed instantly when you attack them if there is a sweating animation over them. You can also press and hold over the unit to see what the result of an attack would be before you push forward with the action. Having a skull on top of a unit would mean that the unit would die after the attack.

Kill 3 Enemies to get a Veteran

the battle of polytopia veteran

Once your unit kills three enemies (through attacks or retaliation), they can be upgraded to a Veteran unit. Veteran units have the same stats except their maximum health is increased by five and they get a full heal. Promotions can only happen once so you could choose to save them for later when they need to be healed. However, Naval units, Giants, Daggers, and Cloaks cannot become Veterans.

Always go for the Capital

the battle of polytopia capital

Cities with underlined names are capitals. We recommend prioritizing capturing these cities to weaken the tribe. Once you get their capital, their source of income will decrease significantly and any embassies they have will be destroyed.
