If you have played and enjoyed a lot of single player RPGs in your time, regardless of whether it was pre- or post-mobile gaming era, the you are certainly familiar with at least one of the numerous popular franchises from Square Enix. Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest are just some of the biggest names in the genre and that are under the Square Enix gaming portfolio. While these franchises enjoy an overabundance of fans and followers, some of Square Enix’s less known RPGs are still on the high end of the franchise.
The SaGa series, more popularly known for the Romancing SaGa and SaGa Frontier games that started in 1989 and spanned more than 10 games in various gaming platforms is among Square Enix’ longest-standing RPG series. Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe is the latest title in the series and stands as the first mobile-exclusive game from the company. Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe’s story takes place 300 years after Romancing SaGa 3 and features a wide assortment of characters from the previous games.
The 16-bit pixel style graphics coupled with old-school character artworks as well as background music all contribute to the nostalgic appeal of the game. Even if you are not a fan of the series but an RPG enthusiast, then you should definitely check out what Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe has in store for you.
Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe takes you through an epic journey reminiscent of classic RPG plots. As the Rise of Monastrum, which is a catastrophic event that takes place once every 300 years, and the Sinistrals along with their legions begin to gather, it is up to you and the army of heroes you gather to end the chaos and destruction. Various heroes from different eras, each with his or her own unique set of skills and talents, will join you on your journey. Part of the usual tasks you will engage in involves choosing from the growing number of your heroes to surpass the many challenges ahead.
Compared to most conventional RPGs, Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe is a little more complex to understand as it strays from conventional RPG mechanics in some aspects and can be tricky to grasp even for long-time RPG enthusiasts. The game does provide a tutorial at the start of your adventure and if you choose to read all of the details, you will secure a fair enough grasp of the basic concepts.
Like most RPGs, Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe requires some patience and dedication. If you often find yourself stuck in a rut and have difficulty winning battles, or if you simply want to find more efficient means of empowering your heroes, then read our Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe beginner’s guide, as it has everything you need to jumpstart your epic adventure!
1. Reroll To Start With More SS Characters
Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe employs the gacha system when it comes to obtaining new styles or heroes to add to your roster. While there will be some heroes who will join you as you progress through the story, and that the thrill of not knowing who you get from the summoning machine, it has become a prevalent activity in gacha RPGs to reroll for the best possible starting line-up of heroes.
Naturally, you can make progress through the game’s main story and most of its other game modes regardless of which heroes you use, but having higher rarity ones to join you at the start of your adventure will make it easier. There are only 3 rarity grades attributable to heroes you can receive and SS-grade styles or heroes are at the top of the rarity charts. In truth, there are various tier lists already available and while we have yet to come with our very own tier list, we feel that there are just so many great heroes or styles in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe that it can be difficult to decide which ones you would rather start with.
Just the same, having more SS-grade heroes to be in your roster at the start of your adventure will always be better so even if you choose not to reroll for styles that are best based on tier lists, at least do one or a couple to have more SS-grade heroes in your team.
Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe will practically hold your hand through the initial tutorial and you will not be able to freely explore different menus until after your first gacha roll. As soon as the gacha tutorial is done, you can access presents via its corresponding icon at the right side of the main screen. Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe provides a very generous amount of gems and tickets you can use for your first few gacha rolls so after claiming everything, tap the summon icon at the bottom of the screen to start rolling some 10x gachas.
If you like what you get, then you can proceed with the story. Otherwise, you should exit the game, clear the data, and then start over. Keep in mind that the “Platinum Ticket Summon” banner that guarantees an SS-grade style can earn you 2 or more SS-grade characters.
2. Progress Through The Main Quest
Like most RPGs, single player or otherwise, having a main story installed makes it so that it should be prioritized above all other content. For one, progressing through the story quest enables you to be better immersed in the fantasy world and gives you a better understanding of how things work, on top of why you are pursuing quests all around. Of course, it can be expected that each section or chapter you complete in pursuit of story progression will earn you the most basic resources you will need to strengthen your heroes.
The main quests in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe are not entirely a jump from one battle to the next to earn rewards. Half of them are actually just cut scenes that reward you with gems as you read and watch through them. Beyond the immediate rewards you can earn from progressing through each section of the story, you will also earn more from achievement objectives that relate to your overall progress.
There are a lot of extra features and game modes you need to unlock to further strengthen and develop your heroes and help you progress with the game’s story along with its other content. This is one of the main reasons why you should push towards completing chapters in the main story as soon as you can. As some game modes have limited attempts within the day, while some features can help you progress as easily as unlocking them, making as many of them available on your first dive can help boost your heroes’ overall strength a lot faster.
The quest button at the right side of the screen is your portal towards the main adventure as well as daily missions and special events. Whenever you unlock a new feature or game mode as you complete some main quest chapters, you will be taken to the new item that you have just unlocked. Remember to hop back into pursuing the next main quest afterwards and only tend to all other activities once you have hit a dead end on the main story.
3. Choose A Balanced Team Roster
There are plenty of characters available in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe and beyond that, characters also sport different styles or versions. While you can make decent progress, especially through the main quests, regardless of which 5 characters you choose as members of your main team, it is always best to choose the best ones from among your roster to invest time and resources in as early as possible.
There are many factors to consider in building a formidable team and beyond individual skills and attributes, you should naturally consider roles or classes as well as elemental affinity. Rarity is an important consideration as well as higher tier styles are expectedly stronger than their lower grade counterparts.
To start off, you should check the details of each character you have in your collection first by clicking the “Edit” button at the bottom of the main screen and then selecting “Styles”. Once you choose a character, You can see his or her skills and relative elemental attack properties.
Be sure to check elemental resistances, abilities, and details as well as you would want to have a good balance of these across your team’s roster. Under the details, take note of the hero’s role, which may be an attacker, a defender, a jammer, or a supporter. For starters, you should consider to have at least one of each job for your team with an extra attacker to complete the 5-person roster.
The usual favorites of most players and the typical crowned kings and queens of tier lists across most, if not all, RPGs are usually attackers or the main damage-dealers of the team. Note that most especially in turn-based strategy RPGs like Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe, attackers have variants in the sense that some specialize in dealing single target damage while others have AoE skills or spells that are more suitable for large groups of enemies.
Defenders typically exhibit high HP and defense stats and their skill sets define their capacity to actually protect their teammates in battles. While provoke may be the most defining tank skill, it will be a challenge to sustain the defender’s health without proper support, some self-buff, or some damage prevention. Provocation, counterattacks, and parries are usual skills to find from defender heroes.
While some RPGs categorize healers from supporters, all healers fall within the supporter class in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe. Naturally, you would want one in your party to restore HP of damaged allied units to boost your team’s survivability. Although not all supporters have healing spells, they all fall within the class as their skills provide support to their team either by providing buffs to fellow team members or using debuffs on enemy units.
Jammers are an atypical class in that these units usually fall within the supporter category. While supporters usually recover HP, boost allies’ stats, or reduce enemies’ stats, jammers specialize in inflicting negative status effects like poison, paralysis, stun, and many others.
Again, while attackers are usually on the spotlight of team-building in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe, much like other RPGs, each of the above classes are important and should be kept on your team. For starters, we suggest going for 2 attackers and 1 of each other class.
In addition to roles, you also have to consider each of your team member’s elemental affinity, particularly their respective skill or spell attack elements and their elemental resistances. As there are 8 different spell and skill attack elements, you will not be able to have a full team representing each one but at the very least, avoid having 2 or more units having the same weakness based on their resistances and also have a wide range of elemental attacks as much as you can afford.
Relative to building your ultimate team, Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe sports a variety of team formations that you should incorporate to your team’s overall capabilities and weaknesses. You can unlock new formations as you progress in the story and claim them through the main mission rewards. If you can, try out various formation setups with your main team before you decide on which one to use by default. It may happen that you will need to switch formation setups later for different game modes and battles so push to unlock new ones as fast as you can.
4. Be Selective When Enhancing Your Heroes
Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe has a unique way of enhancing heroes in that they do not earn levels as you use them in combat or training but rather, each battle they partake in can grant them random stat increases and the EXP they earn is used to level up their style. At the character page, you can actually tap on the hero’s style level to see the full list of perks he or she can unlock with each style level reached.
Considering how heroes can grow stronger in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe, it is important to focus on your main team as soon as possible as each battle they engage in may increase their stats along with guaranteed EXP you can use to level up styles. It is a given that you will not quickly obtain the heroes or styles you would want to be on your main team but as soon as you replace one of your main team’s members, be sure to prioritize them for enhancement immediately.
Naturally, newly-acquired styles will have a hard time to survive in combat especially when they join in at a later time. This is where the Dojo comes in handy, particularly the Expeditions. You will be able to unlock the Expeditions feature in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe early on and it is a great way for your heroes to earn extra attributes as well as style EXP at no extra cost. Based on your progress through the main quest, you will unlock up to 4 different locations where you can send your heroes to explore.
Each location has a set amount of time to complete but heroes can participate regardless of their style level or overall strength. You can deploy your main team heroes here and still be able to use them on battles and quests. Note that the only limitation is you will not be able to use the same character even if they have different styles. For efficiency, be sure to keep track of expedition completion times as you will also earn Aurums from every trip.
After completing some expeditions and battles, be sure to expend earned style EXP points at the Dojo via the Enhance Style feature. Heroes, regardless of their rarity or grade can be levelled up to 30 by default using style EXP they gained from combat and expeditions.
Even if you have not yet reached the initial style level cap, you can already extend the cap further through the “Unlock Style Level Cap” feature within the Dojo as well. You will need specific pieces or shard of the style you wish to upgrade here and you will need 5 for an increase in 1 level. There are also generic pieces you can consume instead of the style’s specific piece. Gold pieces can serve as substitutes for SS pieces, silver pieces for S pieces, and bronze pieces for A pieces. Considering these requirements, it is likely to happen that you will be able to reach the maximum style level of 50 for lower rarity heroes.
On top of relying on luck to secure extra pieces of styles from the gacha, you can send your favorite heroes to training at the dojo. Doing so leaves a chance for deployed heroes to earn some of their pieces. Only 2 spots will initially be available for you to use but you can repair the remaining 3 training dummies at the cost of jewels. Additionally, you will also need to consume some items to stock up on NRG needed to train your heroes. These may be difficult to come by early on but only costs Aurums to purchase so feel free to expend a bit if you really want to earn more of specific style pieces.
5. Enhance And Evolve Your Main Heroes’ Gears
Each hero or style you use in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe only has 3 different equipment that they can use which are weapons, armors, and gears. Like the heroes themselves, these equipment have rarity grades as the main indicator of their strength. As about half of each hero’s strength in many RPGs are attributable to their equipment, having each hero you want to develop comes not just with enhancing the hero but his or her equipment as well.
There are currently 2 interconnected ways of strengthening each hero’s equipment and the way to do so is through the Forge, which you can access through the appropriate icon at the bottom of your screen. The most basic way of doing so is through enhancement where you can consume enhancement materials or similar types of equipment to level up and boost the stats of the main equipment. Once the equipment reaches the maximum level of 5, you will need to evolve them using glowstones that are specific for each type of gear.
Due to limitations of resources, you may want to consider only investing resources in A or higher-grade equipment. Chances are that the B-grade equipment you have will soon be replaced by higher-grade items as you can earn them through various battles and rewards.
6. Gather Important Resources From Daily Dungeons
Beyond Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe main story, additional game modes will be unlocked as you make progress and a lot of it can be engaged in via the Daily Dungeons. To start off, each dungeon offers specific rewards that cater to your needs and while some of the dungeons have offerings that can be earned elsewhere, these are the best areas to farm for the resources you constantly need.
To start off, you will only have 2 challenge attempts to take on the most basic dungeons. The Monster-filled Training Cave can earn you a lot of style EXP you will always need to level up your team’s styles. Though you may have an abundant supply of Aurums early on, you will never run out of uses of it most especially if you continuously train some heroes at the dojo to earn style pieces. Aurums can be farmed from the Big Treasure Hunt dungeon. The rest of the dungeon mode activities relate to ruins that reward you with various glowstones you will need to evolve your gears.
Do note that once you have cleared a dungeon, a next level version unlocks. Higher level dungeons are naturally expected to be more challenging but at the same time offer better rewards. If you can, you should hold out till the end of the day before taking on these dungeons so you will be stronger and if a new one pops up, you should always attempt it. Dungeon engagements also consume energy so be sure to reserve some for your dungeon runs instead of expending them all on story mode battles.
7. Accomplish Missions For Extra Rewards
Every battle or activity you engage in as you venture deeper into the world of Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe earns you valuable resources or items and while these are usually enough to keep your team of heroes at least at par with the current challenges, the game still offers plenty of extra goodies to help you out. One of these features come in the form of missions you can accomplish to earn some extra rewards and for the most part, the objectives you need to accomplish all relate to the typical activities you need to engage in to progress in the game.
The easiest objectives can be seen under the first tab of missions which are the daily missions. You only have 4 missions to accomplish to receive a fifth reward upon their completion. Note that there are 2 special rewards to claim by being online within specific times of the day. Weekly missions are a bit more challenging as you need to accomplish 41 different feats to earn an extra reward.
Note that while weekly missions do not necessarily reflect your accomplishments from daily missions, each one are certainly well within the basic set of activities you go through each day. The good thing about it is that even if you have not been very active on a day, you can still make up for it in succeeding days within the week.
The Main Missions relate to achievements or milestones that relate to your progress across various areas of the game such as the main quest, daily dungeons, upgrade levels, and so on. It may take some time to accomplish some of the main missions but the rewards typically involve jewels, if not more valuable items that are difficult or impossible to obtain anywhere else.
There are also special missions that relate to time-limited events you can engage in via the event quests. It seems that there is always an event running in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe so be sure to always check the event tab of the quests and partake in challenges for immediate rewards as well as the completion of special mission requirements.
8. Claim More Freebies From Shops And Presents
While Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe offers plenty of extra rewards you can obtain based on how active you are in the game, there are actually some rewards you can earn simply by logging in on the game, or in one case, spending a bit of time to watch 15 to 30-minute video ads. These are extra resources that can help you one way or another so if you want to really progress in your adventure as much as you can, then you should not let these opportunities slide by.
If you notice, there are multiple login rewards you can claim as soon as you start the game each day. Beyond all those resources, more can be earned from the different shops. To start off, the jewel shop, which you can access via the Shop icon at the lower right corner of the screen gives you 6 attempts daily to spin the Free Jewel Roulette. You need to watch a short video ad for each spin and can earn as many as 50 jewels each time.
More freebies can be earned through the daily and weekly shops that hover at the upper left side of the main screen. There are 2 daily rewards you can earn and 1 weekly reward so remember to claim then whenever they are available. Remember to claim some of the rewards you earned from events and logins through the presents icon at the right side of the main screen.
9. Take Advantage Of Time-Limited Events
It has been a common practice that every new RPG or strategy game offers a wide variety of special events at launch. These events are designed to tremendously boost the progress of players as well as let players who come in a little late to the party catch up in terms of gathering resources and strengthening their heroes.
Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe is no different and is actually very generous with their special events. While you will already receive a ton of gifts and rewards from actively playing the game and banking some accomplishments, these special time-limited events typically offer greater rewards. As such, each one should be fully taken advantage of.
One such event is the Start Dash Missions that can earn you an SS-grade hero, Platinum Summon Tickets, and other valuable rewards. There are 9 steps to complete and each step contains 9 objectives you need to complete to get to the next one. All of the objectives relate to the usual activities you need to engage in as you play the game, much like all the other missions we discussed as well. For best results, you should visit this feature by clicking on its banner at the top of the main screen to see each objective and push to accomplish each one as fast as you can.
Another special event can be accessed via the special missions icon at the left side of the main screen. There are 3 sets of missions further divided into 41 objectives. Accomplishing each feat will either reward you with Aurum or materials to increase the level cap of SS-grade styles. Note that you will receive 3,000 jewels as a final reward if you complete each and every objective so try as much as you can to accomplish each mission.
