One of the most frustrating things about online card games is the waiting time. You don’t know if your opponent is thinking, asleep, or has gone off somewhere. 37Games’ new mobile title Pathfinder Duels solves that problem and creates a true fast-paced collectible card game that is pure action. Available on Android and iOS, the game is set on a simple 12-space board. Half the space is yours, and the other half is your opponent’s. Similarly to other card battle games, you will play cards each turn in order to attack each other. What sets this game apart, however, is the simultaneous turn-style battle system. It eliminates the long wait times and encourages quick plays from players. The game also has special dragon cards that turn up the heat on the battlefield. 1. Collect More Heroes
The game gives you one hero to start with. It is good for learning the mechanics of the game, and getting you through your initial matches, but you will need to expand if you want to get better. The first hero you receive will be too basic to actually get you anywhere in the leaderboards. Once you are comfortable enough with the gameplay, it is time to move on to more complex strategies.
In order to get a new hero, you will need to go to the Tavern. It is the third tab on the Main Menu, and it is labeled Unlock Heroes. Once there, you will see all the available hero. Pick the one you like, and you will need to defeat them in a duel in order to unlock them. Don’t underestimate the heroes, though. Some of them can be difficult to acquire.
2. Assemble Your Deck Carefully
Remember, the space on your deck is limited. You can’t just stuff it with the most powerful cards you can get your hands on. You will need to consider how each card works with the rest of the deck, and see if you can actually use it in battle. Each deck has its own strengths and weaknesses, so make sure you fully understand what you are building.
While it is a good idea to experiment with card combinations, there are some that you know will not work even before you use them. For example, if you are running a strength deck, a stealth spell will not do much good, except in very specific scenarios. Since you won’t know what you will be up against, it is better to work on the strengths of your entire deck instead of preparing for various possible situations that may not even occur.
3. Buff Weaker Cards
Since you will not be able to summon strong cards right away, it is important that you find low-cost cards that can hold the fort until the big guys arrive. A good way to go about this is to use a card that can be buffed over time. For example, when you use the Kobold Battle Leader, he won’t seem very useful. Your hero will have to take a few hits in order to maximize the Kobold Battle Leader’s full potential. Since its attack power increases every time your hero takes a hit, you could have a major damage dealer on your hands after a couple of rounds.
4. Don’t Neglect Your Defense
Attacking is not the only focus in Pathfinder Duels. You will need to strategically defend if you want to get the most out of your cards. Grey cards can come in handy in these situations. You can use them as shields to absorb incoming damage from opponents. Just place your important cards behind your grey creatures, and you should be able to survive a little longer.
5. Don’t Forget The Story Mode
The single-player mode of Pathfinder Duels is a good place to practice. You can try out different decks and work on your tactics. It also allows you to use heroes that you have not played with, and give you access to cards that you have not unlocked. Not only will this help you decide on which cards you like, it will also give you an idea of how other players might use certain cards in future battles.
