Downwell Tips, Cheats & Guide to Collect More Gems and Survive Longer

It’s not often that you see a casual mobile game available for iOS devices only, but for the meantime, Devolver Digital’s Downwell is only available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This is a “curious game about a young boy venturing down a well in search of untold treasures with only his Gunboots to protect him.” You’re basically going deeper and deeper into the well, dealing with all sorts of enemies and dangers, but with all those scattered gems to look forward to. You can also enter secret shops to purchase items, hidden caves to gather more treasure and relics, and do a whole lot more in this game, where no two trips down the well are identical.

Before you get your gunboots on and take a trip down the well, we suggest you check the following Downwell tips, tricks and hints. They can help you achieve more in your first expeditions down the well, and if you’ve been playing for the past few days, you just might learn a new thing or two.

1. If You See A Weapon, Pick It Up

It doesn’t matter if the weapon looks weaker than what you currently have. If it’s a weapon, then you want to pick it up, as it will add to your hit points or charge. And with more HP and Gunboot charge means better chances of surviving longer. Try this if you’re just starting out, but be warned that it might not be a wise move anymore in the later stages.

2. String Combos Together

Stringing combos is easy in principle – just kill repeated enemies in succession without hitting platforms. And the more enemies you kill in a combo string, the more gems you can earn. Eight-kill combos get you a hundred gems, 15-kill combos 100 gems and a charge, and 25-kill combos 100 gems, a charge, and a hit point. Long story short – combo-ing is what it’s all about if you want to stockpile more gems.

3. You Can Also Wall Jump In The Well

It may sound like an odd thing to do in a well, but you can wall jump too. The folks from Devolver Digital don’t really make this clear, but if you’ve got a full round of ammo and happen to bump against a wall, you can hit on jump again and pull away from the wall and return to the center of the well. This won’t affect your Gunboot charge in anyway, so go ahead and wall jump to get out of those tight spots.

4. How To Add To / Preserve Your Combo String

As bullets reload whenever you stomp on enemies, you can alternate stomping and firing at enemies if you want to extend your combo and kill more enemies in succession. You can also visit caves or stores in the well as they won’t reset your combo; it’s sound strategy to duck in there for a bit to collect yourself for a bit, then return to killing once you’re all good again.

5. Choose The Right Power-Up

It will all depend on you, but the Member’s Card is usually the simplest and safest choice. If you’ve got the store available at the start of each stage, it’s like a gift that keeps on giving, just as long as you’ve got enough gems to spend. Then again, that’s what those combos are for, right?
