Modern Islands Defense is a “modern” tower defense game for iOS and Android devices, and the game invites you to fight these “modern” battles and defend your islands against invaders. In fact, developer stereo7’s description does mention the word “modern” quite a lot in the description, so we’ll ease up on that word and focus on the features. These include creating a team of snipers, gunners, rockets, and defensive towers, the ability to fight in a variety of environments (islands, mountains, and deserts), different types of enemy units to defend against, and the ability to upgrade your units in the laboratory. Looking at the description, this is a rather simple TD game, as it doesn’t overwhelm with tons of weapons and tower types, or more levels than you can handle.
While this game does indeed appear to be simpler than most other tower defense games, you may still need some help in figuring things out, and coming up with the right kind of defense to hold those enemies off. We will be answering those questions and a few others in this list of Modern Islands Defense tips and tricks. And we’ll be keeping these tips as simple as possible, as this is a guide primarily designed for first-time players.
1. Familiarize Yourself With The Different Towers
Modern Islands Defense comes with six types of towers, and it’s these units that you need to familiarize yourself with before the others. The Machine Gun (spelled as one word in the game) is your basic, “classic” tower, more of an all-rounder with decent enough speed and a fair amount of power. The Sniper is, quite clearly, your long-range tower. The Frag is best used if you need a lot of power and a wide area of attack. The Flame has good power and can attack enemies in a straight line. The Ice Bunker is capable of slowing down enemies. Lastly, the Tesla is good on offense, but a bit limited in terms of range and speed compared to the others.
2. Place Your Towers Properly
After getting to know each tower type and knowing what they do, the next thing you need to get down pat is the placement of those towers. As each level has a different layout and different points where you can place the towers, you may need to adjust your approach on a regular basis. Still, there are some general things to keep in mind when it comes to tower placement. For instance, you can place an Ice Bunker as the first line of defense, as it works by slowing down your enemies. You should be placing your towers in front if the enemies are coming in from the left. And once the Ice Bunker has worked its magic and slowed down the bad guys, you can use a Flame or a Tesla to blast them with some better-than-average firepower. You can also have some Snipers out back to attack enemies from afar; they may sometimes feel unnecessary, but they can surprise the enemies and contribute to the damage you’re inflicting.
3. Make Sure Your Towers Are Upgraded
Completing each level will reward you with coins and other goodies, and you’ll use those coins for upgrading your towers and improving their range, firepower, and other statistics. Be warned that the cost of upgrades will increase progressively, and you may reach a point where you can no longer afford the upgrades. Fortunately, there’s a way to get around this, and we’ll be explaining it below.
4. Grind For Coins
Don’t have enough coins to pay for those essential upgrades? You don’t need to worry, but you may need to be patient. You can go back to levels you’ve already completed and replay them, especially the ones that aren’t too difficult or time-consuming to complete. Although the coin rewards may be better, it’s not always a good idea to take on harder missions, or those that require more time to complete. But there are other ways to earn some coins, other ways that don’t require any effort, save for some social involvement, so to say. One example would be rating the game on Google Play or on the App Store for a decent amount of bonus coins.
