Whether you are going to win one star, two stars, or three stars depends on the number of lines you draw and the amount of ink you use. So make sure to always pay attention to the ink bar placed at the top of the screen. If you go under 33%, you will earn one star. If you go under 66%, you will get two stars. So if you want to earn the three of them, make sure not to go under 66% of your ink.
There is a cheat you can make use of. If you are having problems earning three stars and you are craving for them, go to the victory screen and scroll down to the bottom.
