Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery Year 1 Walkthrough

When the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone hit the cinemas way back in 2001, kids from all over the world were wishing their own letter from Hogwarts would soon arrive. As the movie’s gigantic success introduced the witchcraft and wizarding world to hundreds of thousands—even millions!—of viewers, the books were soon sought-after by readers who wanted to eagerly follow the daring and magical adventures of “The Boy Who Lived.” In fact, the first Harry Potter book alone sold over 120 million copies, and the whole seven-book series in general sold an astounding half a billion copies.

Nowadays, it’s impossible for anyone not to be at least remotely aware of who Harry Potter is. Beyond the books and the movies are tons of other media and merchandise related to the Harry Potter franchise—games included.

Among the vast array of Harry Potter games is Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, which was released by Jam City, Inc. in 2018. In this game, players are treated to a heavily story-based experience where one can virtually become a witch or wizard in the famed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

harry potter hogwarts mystery year 1 complete walkthrough

One of the fantastic things about the game is that even if you’re not a “Potterhead,” there are tons of things and features you can enjoy while following the storyline. Here, you play as your own character and, as the title of the game suggests, are out to solve a mystery in Hogwarts.

For those who aren’t too familiar with Harry Potter lore, studying in Hogwarts is tantamount to taking a seven-year course, with students learning about different magical subjects like Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, Divination, and Defense Against the Dark Arts, to name a few. There are also lessons about flying on a broom, playing Quidditch, and a host of other activities that you will encounter in the game.

If anything, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a great starting point for those who want to get into the Harry Potter lore even if they haven’t read the books or seen the movies. On the other hand, those who are long-time followers of the series will find this game a delightful journey in which they can live out their own magical adventure and discover the secrets that lie in Hogwarts.

For this article, we will be covering a detailed walkthrough of your first year studying in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This walkthrough will be divided into 10 chapters featuring main story quests and lessons. We’ve left out the side quests so you can enjoy exploring them yourself. We’ve only included one side quest in this walkthrough, which deals with different school-related clubs you may join later.

There’s a lot of ground to cover so let’s get right into our Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery Year 1 Walkthrough!

Summary of Gameplay Mechanics for Year 1

Before diving into each chapter, allow us to explain some of the gameplay mechanics you will come across during your first year in Hogwarts. Aside from following the main quests and lessons, you’ll be able to interact with other characters. In many cases, how you respond based on a number of available choices will have their own respective consequences or rewards.

Thus, while playing the game, you will encounter at least one or a combination of these scenarios:

Choosing Responses and Gaining Attribute Points

choosing response in harry potter hogwarts mystery

Whenever you interact with a character, whether during lessons or in conversation, there are instances when you will be presented with multiple responses you can choose from.

With every response you choose, you will may have the chance to increase your 3 Attributes, namely:

  • Courage: This represents your strength of nerve, bravery, and might.
  • Empathy: This represents your loyalty, friendship, and ability to understand others.
  • Knowledge: This represents your academic aptitude, investigative skills, and the sum of what you know.

This aspect of the game will be introduced sometime in Chapter 2. It isn’t always clear which Attribute you will gain points for based on your response, unless it is explicitly indicated. Thus, you may pick a response that suits your character, or one that you think is more likely to increase a particular Attribute.

Occasionally, some responses will require a certain Attribute to be at a specific level, or else you won’t be able to choose that response. Choosing a certain response will influence your story’s path and progression.

harry potter hogwarts mystery attribute points

You may also earn Attribute points during lessons. There are 2 ways you can earn these:

  • By choosing Attribute points as a reward during lessons.
  • The game will give you specific Attribute points after completing mini tasks depending on the subject. Courage points can be earned during Flying lessons, Empathy points can be earned during Charms lessons, and Knowledge points can be earned during Potions lessons.

Clicking Highlighted Items

harry potter hogwarts mystery highlighted item

Clicking highlighted items is done to complete tasks and fill up Star Meters. Each click will be equivalent to at least 1 energy spent. You will begin with a total of 24 energy but will be able to increase your energy limit later on. Occasionally, you will also be rewarded by the game with extra energy. Most tasks for which energy can be used are typically completed within at least 1 hour. Some major events in the game will also require a significant waiting time before they can be unlocked.

When you reach Chapter 7, you will also be introduced to the 3 different clubs that you can join in Hogwarts (more on how clubs work later). When clicking highlighted items, you will have the chance to pick which items to click on. Normally, you will notice that items are highlighted in blue, but once the clubs have been introduced, you will see that some items are highlighted in yellow, green, or pink. Each color corresponds to a particular club and clicking on them will help increase your ranking in that specific club.

In a nutshell, the following are the 3 clubs with their corresponding colors:

  • Sphinx – Pink
  • Dragon – Yellow
  • Hippogriff – Green

Tracing Shapes

tracing shapes in harry potter hogwarts mystery

You normally encounter these during lessons, but you can trace shapes anytime, especially if you need to cast a spell. Specific spells have their own corresponding shapes or figures. To successfully trace a shape or figure, we recommend taking care not to lift your finger so your gesture can completely register in the game. If you don’t successfully trace the shape on your first try, the game will let you try again a few more times, though it’s possible to still fail in this activity if you let the game idle.

Tapping a Circle

tapping a circle in harry potter hogwarts mystery

During lessons, your professor may ask you to tap the moving circle once it’s the same size as the dotted circles on your screen. Doing this successfully will help fill up your Star Meter. Unlike the shape-tracing activity, you only get one chance to tap the circle.

Answering Questions

answering questions in harry potter hogwarts mystery

From time to time, professors will ask you some trivia-like questions during their lessons. Picking the right answers will help fill your Star Meter. Normally, you will have 3 answers to pick from and the questions, though related to the lesson, are chosen by the game at random.

Playing Gobstones

By Chapter 3, you will be introduced to a game of Gobstones, which is the equivalent of playing marbles in the Muggle world. You typically have to play Gobstones with certain characters to strengthen your relationship with them, especially if you want to convince them to accompany you during quests.

playing gobstones in harry potter hogwarts mystery

Depending on the person you’re playing with, your Attributes need to be at a certain level to increase your chances of winning. If you’re not able to match (or exceed) the Attributes recommended for that round, you will get a penalty with each turn, making it harder for you to fill up your Diamond Meter, which is similar to the Star Meter. On the other hand, exceeding the recommended Attribute points will get you a bonus.

harry potter hogwarts mystery attribute level

When playing Gobstones, you need to choose between 3 responses wherein one is the best answer, one is so-so, and one is the worst answer. You have a limited number of turns in every game of Gobstones so picking the best answers will help you fill up the Diamond Meter faster. Choosing responses is also dependent on the character you’re playing with and the goal for the interaction, as seen in the image below.

harry potter hogwarts mystery trust

To play a round of Gobstones, you will also need to spend coins so make sure you have enough when you encounter these in the main storyline.

Dueling

You will learn all about dueling at the beginning of Chapter 5. Similar to playing Gobstones, challenging someone to a duel will have recommended Attribute levels you need to match or exceed.

In dueling, you will have 3 stances:

harry potter hogwarts mystery stance

Think of this as a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. If you manage to pick a winning stance, you will be able to cast a spell first during your turn.

harry potter hogwarts mystery aggressive stance

Depending on the stance you’ve chosen, you will be presented with 2 moves tied to that stance. Then, each move will have a corresponding Attribute tied to it as well. It pays to pick the move tied to a high Attribute level as you will gain a bonus.

harry potter hogwarts mystery aggressive moves

If you don’t pick a winning stance, your opponent will cast a spell first, then you will get your turn. In casting spells, you may be asked to trace shapes to complete this action.

If you and your opponent pick the same stance, the dueler with the least stamina will gain a bit of stamina.

Navigating this Walkthrough

As mentioned, this walkthrough is divided into 10 chapters, plus lessons. Each chapter is further divided into parts in accordance with the story. You may or may not encounter tasks in a chapter part.

For your convenience, we will indicate whether a chapter part will have waiting times before they can be accessible, or if they have tasks to complete by outlining the completion times and number of Stars or Diamonds needed to pass that task or interaction. By default, lessons will always have completion times and Star requirements indicated. It’s always recommended to enter any kind of task with a full bar of energy. For tasks with a 5-Star requirement, you may need at least 2 full bars of energy to complete those.

Moreover, characters such as Rowan and your Prefect will be referred to as “they/them.” This is because Rowan may be male or female depending on your character creation choices, and your Prefect’s character will depend on which House you pick.

Now that these are cleared up, let’s get into each of the 10 chapters you will be following for Year 1:

Chapter 1

Part 1.1

Waiting time till accessible: None

Upon entering the game, you’re given a chance to select and customize your own personal character. You can either be a witch or a wizard.

At this point, you may only access the customization options for your character’s basic physical features. It’s much later that you will be able to customize your wardrobe. Keep in mind that if you want to change how your avatar looks, you can always do so later.

Part 1.2

Waiting time till accessible: None

After customizing your character, you will find yourself in Diagon Alley. You will see that there is an exclamation point on top of another student’s head. If you click on the exclamation symbol, a student named Rowan Khanna will talk to you. The game presents Rowan as your unofficial guide to all things Hogwarts.

harry potter hogwarts mystery start

As mentioned, Rowan’s identity will depend on the identity you choose for your character. For example, if your character is a witch, Rowan will be a witch. If you choose to be a wizard, Rowan will be a wizard as well. In this playthrough, our character is a witch, making Rowan a witch as well.

To help you prepare for your first year at Hogwarts, Rowan will instruct you to go to Flourish and Blotts, where you can find the books you need for school.

harry potter hogwarts mystery books

Here, you will notice that a scroll will appear at the left-hand side of your screen. This is where you will find your list of tasks and objectives.

Part 1.3

Waiting time till accessible: None

Upon entering Flourish and Blotts, you will have to complete your first task, which is to click on glowing or highlighted objects. Each object will require a certain number of times to be clicked.

Each click will subtract 1 energy from your total. Here, you will start with a total base number of 24 energy. You can either tap on the objects themselves or the word on the dialogue box on top of them. One energy unit is replenished every 4 minutes.

Part 1.4

Waiting time till accessible: None

Once you’ve completed the task at Flourish and Blotts and found all your books, you will again talk to Rowan in Diagon Alley. They will ask for your name, which you can change anytime.

harry potter hogwarts mystery name

Rowan will also ask you about your Hogwarts acceptance letter, as well as what kind of accessory they should get to make themselves look like a serious intellectual. You will be presented with 3 choices. Pick the one that you feel will suit Rowan best.

Part 1.5

Waiting time till accessible: None

After chatting with Rowan, your next objective is to visit Ollivander’s so you can get your first wand. Inside the shop, you will meet Garrick Ollivander, who will offer you a wand to try out. However, this wand is clearly not for you and Ollivander explains that it is the wand that chooses its wielder instead of the other way around.

To your surprise, Ollivander will mention your brother Jacob as he claims to remember every wand he has ever sold. He expresses regret that your brother’s wand was snapped in half when he was expelled from Hogwarts.

This is where the mystery of your brother Jacob begins to slowly unfold: you tell Ollivander that Jacob ran away from home ever since he was expelled and has been missing ever since. Ollivander will ask you how you’ve felt about the situation and will be offered 3 ways to respond. Your choice will determine the kind of wand Ollivander will give you.

harry potter hogwarts mystery ollivander

Upon receiving your first wand, you will have to trace a shape to try your wand out.

Part 1.6

Waiting time till accessible: None

After receiving your first wand, you return to Diagon Alley where Rowan is waiting. They show you that they’re wearing the accessory you’ve suggested and will ask if they look good in it.

After a short conversation, you offer to be friends with Rowan, having discovered that you both perceive yourselves as weird individuals. Rowan asks why people would even consider you weird, upon which you reveal the name of your brother. Rowan is surprised, delivering a little bit of exposition about who your brother is—or rather, what he has become most infamous for.

After some more talking, Rowan asks how they can support you when people will give you trouble about your brother. You are presented with 2 choices.

Now that you’ve gotten your books, received your first wand, and made a friend, Chapter 1 of your first year in Hogwarts is concluded.

Chapter 2

Part 2.1

Waiting time till accessible: None

It is finally September, which means that the school year in Hogwarts has begun. You will find yourself in the majestic Great Hall for the Welcoming Feast and Sorting Ceremony. Professor Minerva McGonagall, the deputy headmistress, explains the 4 Houses you can be sorted in. These are:

  • Gryffindor: For the brave and chivalrous. The House head is Professor McGonagall herself.
  • Hufflepuff: For the kind and diligent. The House head is Professor Pomona Sprout.
  • Ravenclaw: For the witty and wise. The House head is Professor Filius Flitwick, who is also your Charms teacher this year.
  • Slytherin: For the cunning and ambitious. The House head is Professor Severus Snape, who is also your Potions teacher this year.

When Professor McGonagall announces your turn, you will notice that people in the Great Hall will begin mumbling among themselves. It was just as Rowan had told you before: that everyone will recognize who you are because the story of your brother was covered by the newspaper The Daily Prophet.

When you are placed under the Sorting Hat, the game will ask you which House you’re hoping to be sorted into. Pick from any of the four Houses. The House you will be sorted into is the same House that Rowan will be in. For this playthrough, we picked Gryffindor.

After the Sorting Ceremony, Professor Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, delivers a speech to the students. Here, you get a glimpse of the timeline the story is set in, which is several years before the events of the Harry Potter books and movies. Dumbledore explains that Harry is safe, but it will be years until he could attend Hogwarts and, for now, it’s your turn.

Dumbledore also explains how the House Cup works, wherein triumphs will earn House points while rule-breaking will lose House points.

harry potter hogwarts mystery professor dumbledore

At the end of the year, the House with the most points is awarded with the House Cup. Your choices throughout the course of the game may or may not affect your House’s standing in the House Cup.

Part 2.2

Waiting time till accessible: None

After the Welcoming Feast and the Sorting Ceremony, you will have to return to your House’s Common Room. If you scroll to the left, you will see that other than the exclamation point indicating a quest, there are speech bubbles on top of some of the students’ heads. You may click on these if you’re curious about what they have to say.

harry potter hogwarts mystery gryffindor house

When you click on the exclamation point, you will share a short conversation with Rowan. However, as you are talking, a random third-year student will approach you and express their outrage at you being sorted into the same House, which is apparently also the House your brother was sorted into and whose reputation he had ruined.

harry potter hogwarts mystery third-year

Rowan tells the angry student off regardless of your chosen response back at Diagon Alley. As the angry student walks away, Rowan changes the topic to the timetable for your classes. Rowan asks which activity you are most looking forward to. You will be presented with 3 choices.

harry potter hogwarts mystery activity choice

This concludes your story-related tasks, but you’re not finished yet! You still have to finish your lessons. You may find these at the right side of your task list.

harry potter hogwarts mystery story tasks

Lesson 1: Lumos

Completion time: 1 hour

Stars to pass: ⭐⭐

Your first lesson is Charms and you will be learning about the spell Lumos. Just like your Common Room, some students will have speech bubbles above them. You can click on these before starting your lesson with Professor Flitwick.

harry potter hogwarts mystery charms classroom

Once lessons begin, Professor Flitwick will reveal that he knows your brother and that Jacob was one of his most skilled yet rebellious students. That said, Professor Flitwick will ask if you’re going to follow the rules. You have 3 options to respond.

harry potter hogwarts mystery professor flitwick

As the lesson begins, Professor Flitwick explains what Lumos is, and what it is useful for. After a quick demonstration, you will be asked to complete actions to fill up your Star Meter by clicking on highlighted objects, tapping on the circle, and tracing shapes. He will also ask you a question about the Lumos charm, which is selected by the game at random. This is one of the questions you may encounter:

When you’ve earned your stars, Professor Flitwick will then compliment you on casting Lumos and award 10 points to your House.

You will then see a notification icon in your picture, which is found at the top left-hand side of the screen. This is where you can track your lessons and achievements, customize your character, and check your Attribute points. Lumos will be added to the list of Charms that you will learn this school year. There are 8 Charms that you can unlock in your first year.

Lesson 2: Cure for Boils

Completion time: 1 hour

Stars to pass: ⭐⭐

As you’re headed to your next class, which is Potions, you will see that Rowan is being accosted down the hall by Merula Snyde, a first-year student from Slytherin. Merula tries to harass Rowan into saying that she is the most powerful witch in all of Hogwarts. You walk to Rowan’s side and you are given two options to respond.

harry potter hogwarts mystery merula

Your choice will gain you 5 Attribute points to that which aligns with your response.

Merula will then focus her attention on you. She brings up what your brother has done and is clearly trying to cause trouble. You have 3 ways to respond, which will also gain you 5 Attribute points.

harry potter hogwarts mystery attributes

Whichever you choose, Professor Snape will appear and break up the argument. He is somehow convinced that you’re trouble and tells you all to get to Potions class, and that you’re lucky you’re not headed for detention.

Once you’re in Potions class, click on the exclamation point above Professor Snape’s head to start the lesson. He gives a brief introduction about the lesson, which is making a simple Cure for Boils Potion. Complete the tasks to fill up your Star Meter.

Once you’re done brewing your potion, Professor Snape will think that you aren’t so incompetent after all—at least until your caludron explodes. This angers Snape and remarks that you are “somehow even worse than your brother.” He will take 10 points from your House.

Snape will then ask if you have anything to say for yourself. You will be given 3 options.

harry potter hogwarts mystery attribute points

As you can see, some responses require you to be at a certain Attribute level. In this case, you need to have a Courage level of 2 to unlock the last response. On the other hand, saying that Merula sabotaged you will earn you 10 Knowledge points.

With Snape out of earshot, Merula eventually reveals that she did sabotage your potion, causing it to explode. Realizing that you lost your house 10 points, you and Rowan seek to recover those. The Cure for Boils Potion is added to the list of potions you will learn this year, the total of which is 4.

This concludes Chapter 2 of your first year.

Chapter 3

Part 3.1

Waiting time till accessible: None

Apparently, word in Hogwarts travels extremely fast so you are summoned by your Prefect back into your Common Room after the fiasco in Potions. On the way, you meet Ben Copper, who thanks you for standing up to Merula. After a short conversation, you make friends with Ben and somehow manage to ease his worries.

harry potter hogwarts mystery ben

Once you’re done talking to Ben, you will have to head to your Common Room to meet with your Prefect. As mentioned, each House has a different Prefect depending on your chosen playthrough.

At the Common Room, your Prefect will ask about how you already lost your House 10 points and placed Gryffindor in 4th place for the House Cup.

Your Prefect will bring up the issue about how your brother ruined your House’s reputation, to which you will be offered 3 choices to respond. This will gain you 5 points to the Attribute corresponding to your chosen answer.

harry potter hogwarts mystery angelica

You explain what happened with Merula in Potions class and your Prefect reveals that you have a chance to reclaim your lost House points as Professor Snape sent a letter to your Common Room, asking you to bring a jar of Pickled Slugs from the Potions Storeroom, the location of which is indicated in Snape’s letter.

Rowan offers to accompany you as a token of gratitude for saving them from Merula’s bullying. You may choose whether or not to take them with you. Your choice will let you earn 5 Attribute points.

If you let Rowan accompany you to the alleged storeroom, they will point out that this might not be the correct location. However, despite their suspicions, you enter the room anyway.

Surrounded by darkness, you will be asked to cast Lumos.

harry potter hogwarts mystery lumos

From behind the door, Merula reveals that she locked you inside the room with a plant called the Devil’s Snare. You will have to cast Lumos to keep the Devil’s Snare at bay since it’s sensitive to light.

A prompt will then appear so you can complete the task by filling up your Star Meter by clicking on highlighted objects. Occasionally, you will also have to cast Lumos by tracing the shape on the screen.

harry potter hogwarts mystery energy

We recommend accepting this task with a full bar of energy. Otherwise, you will have to either purchase more energy or wait until you have enough to complete the task. Fortunately, you are given 8 hours to do so.

Upon completing the task, a familiar character will appear behind the door: Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts’ groundskeeper. He forces the door open and helps you get out of the Devil’s Snare’s grasp.

You (or Rowan) will reveal to Hagrid that Merula locked you inside. Hagrid asks what you’re going to do about it. You have 3 choices to respond, which will earn you 5 Attribute points.

Taking your Prefect’s advice, you change into new clothes. This task opens up your Cosmetic menu, where you can change your character’s clothes, as well as appearance. You may check the Owned and Store tabs for available apparel.

If you head to the Store tab, you will find more clothing options, some of which may even give you a one-time bonus for Attribute points.

Keep this in mind as this will certainly help later, especially if you need to increase specific Attribute points to play Gobstones with certain characters. Some cosmetic items may be purchased with gold or gems. For this specific task, you don’t necessarily have to buy anything, but simply change into clothes you already own if you don’t wish to spend any of your currency.

She even accuses your brother of working for Voldemort after being expelled, and goes so far as to accuse you of the same. You have 3 ways to respond.

Instead, they suggest going to the hospital wing first, expressing concern over the voices you’ve heard and the strange vision you’ve seen at the Artefact Room. Thus, you need to play a round of Gobstones with Rowan to convince them that studying the spells is a more immediate need than going to the hospital wing.

After practicing, Rowan suggests trying the spell out on them to know if it really works. You hesitate and Rowan asks you what’s stopping you from testing the spell on them. You have two response choices, which will earn you 5 Attribute points.

Either way, you practice the tickling charm on Rowan by tracing a shape. Amid uncontrollable laughter, indicating that the spell was a success, Rowan tells you that Professor Snape will be teaching you to brew Wiggenweld Potion—a healing potion—during your next class. This will let you learn the third and final requirement for dueling given by your Prefect.

Part 4.6

Completion time: 1 hour

Stars to pass: ⭐⭐

Bonus stars: ⭐⭐⭐

Unlike other lessons, this part of the story is included as a main quest. In Potions class, you meet up with Rowan, who had planned to convince Snape to teach you how to brew Wiggenweld Potion. However, it turns out that Merula beat you to the punch by requesting that specific lesson from Snape, causing you and Rowan to suspect that she might also be preparing for your inevitable duel.

Snape eventually breaks up your conversation and begins the lesson. He briefly explains what the Wiggenweld Potion does, which can heal injuries or even reverse the effects of a Sleeping Draught.

Similar to other lessons, you can complete this task by clicking on highlighted objects.

Once you’re done brewing your potion, Snape will consider it passable. Meanwhile, he will praise Merula’s concoction as flawless. He asks you what you think about his estimation. You have 3 ways to respond.

Each choice will give you 10 Attribute points. However, if you choose to “appease Snape,” you will also earn 10 House points.

Regardless, Merula will challenge you to a duel at the Courtyard.

Part 5.1

Dueling Recommended Attributes:

harry potter hogwarts mystery recommended attributes

Before dueling Merula, you will first meet with your Prefect at the Training Grounds to learn how to properly use the knowledge you’ve gathered. Your Prefect will be impressed with what you’ve learned but will tell you that the best way to duel is to practice with someone else—in this case, Rowan.

harry potter hogwarts mystery duel practice

Though you both don’t want to hurt each other, you and Rowan eventually agree to practice. To engage in a duel with someone, you need to click the icon that looks like 2 wands crossing.

Here, the game will discuss the basics of dueling, which we have mentioned in the early parts of this walkthrough.

In dueling with Rowan, we commend starting with an Aggressive stance, then choosing mostly Sneaky or Defensive stances as Rowan rarely uses the Aggressive stance. Of course, since dueling can be a different experience for everyone, you need to gauge whether it’s more prudent to attack or heal depending on your health bar.

harry potter hogwarts mystery duel strategy

When you’ve managed to beat Rowan in a duel, your Prefect will praise your performance. You’re now ready to face Merula’s challenge and put a stop to her bullying.

Lesson 1: Wingardium Leviosa

Completion time: 3 hours

Stars to pass: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Since the next part of the story will have a waiting time before becoming accessible, you may complete your next Charms lesson in the interim. In this lesson, Professor Flitwick will teach you all about Wingardium Leviosa, the Levitation Charm.

With 5 Stars as a requirement for completion, this is a rather long lesson so be sure to attend with a full bar of energy or two. You will be asked to click highlighted objects, tap the circle, and trace shapes.

Dueling Recommended Attributes:

harry potter hogwarts mystery recommended attributes

Once you’re able to access this part of the story, you will meet Rowan at the Courtyard. They tell you that Merula is threatening Ben Copper despite his attempts not to engage in a fight with the Slytherin bully. You figure that this is Merula’s way of getting your attention and provoking you into a duel.

You interject upon seeing Merula verbally harassing Ben and no one standing up for him.

harry potter hogwarts mystery insult

Out of the blue, Merula casts Flipendo on Ben, knocking him back. Merula will dish out more insults against you. Ultimately, she will try to get you to duel with her. You have 2 response options.

harry potter hogwarts mystery duel decision

Refusing to duel will gain you 5 Empathy points. However, this will also make Merula cast the Flipendo charm on you, knocking your character on the ground. Afterwards, you will see the icon displaying the 2 wands crossing—after Merula insults you some more, of course.

On the other hand, if you choose to duel, you will gain 5 Courage points. In this case, you will strike first with Expelliarmus by tracing a shape.

defeating merula in harry potter hogwarts mystery

After knocking Merula back, the icon to start the duel will appear.

Unlike Rowan, Merula is a little more predictable in a duel. Continuously choose the Aggressive stance as Merula will keep choosing the Sneaky stance, though there is a chance she may use the Aggressive stance as well. Even so, you will have a bigger chance of defeating her when you go Aggressive.

Once you defeat Merula, you will disarm her with Expelliarmus. She’ll get angry and go on a tirade about how she’s better than everyone else, at least until Snape walks in on the commotion.

Naturally, Snape thinks that you’re the cause of trouble. Together with Professor Flitwick, he will remind you that unauthorized dueling has dire consequences. Snape will tell you to meet him at the West Towers to face the music.

Chapter 6

Part 6.1

Waiting time till accessible: None

Before meeting Snape, you chance upon Penny Haywood, who is one of the most popular first years. She tells you that she simply wanted to thank you for standing up to Merula and that if you need anything, you can ask her anytime as she knows the gossip around Hogwarts and is quite skilled at brewing potions. This will certainly come in handy later.

harry potter hogwarts mystery penny

After your short chat with Penny, Snape will castigate you and Merula for dueling without permission. Merula tries to pin all the blame on you, but Snape tells her that he saw her cast the first spell—though you’re not getting off the hook either. Once more, he reminds you of the damage that your brother caused in Hogwarts. He asks you why you shouldn’t receive the harshest punishment. You have 3 answers to choose from and will earn 5 Attribute points.

Unfortunately, whichever your answer will be, you will lose 20 House points. This will also happen even if you’re in Slytherin.

Snape makes it clear that he is all for expelling you, but it appears that Dumbledore thinks it’s unfair in this case. You’re then interrupted by Mr. Filch, who asks Snape to come with him as it’s a matter concerning the “vaults.”

Instead of returning to your Common Rooms as Snape instructed, Merula immediately follows Snape and Filch, convinced that they were talking about the Cursed Vaults. You also follow Merula, wondering why she would be interested in the matter.

You catch up to Merula and you both listen in on the conversation between Snape and Filch. Their words are cryptic without much context.

Bonus stars:

We’ve previously mentioned at the beginning of this walkthrough that we would only include one side quest. This one in particular deals with the 3 different clubs that you can join. At the Great Hall, you meet with Penny and listen to Professor McGonagall’s special announcement about clubs:

harry potter hogwarts mystery professor mcgonagall 2
harry potter hogwarts mystery professor mcgonagall 3

After a brief explanation, you may be able to approach Professor McGonagall to ask more questions. This will trigger a prompt for a short task. However, unlike other tasks, you’ll notice that the highlighted objects are not just blue, but they can have yellow, pink, or green highlights.

harry potter hogwarts mystery clubs

As previously stated at the beginning of this walkthrough, colors correspond to a specific club and clicking on objects with these colors will gain you XP for that club. Blue objects indicate “normal” objects wherein you simply gain points to fill up the Star Meter. Objects will be colored at random.

After completing the task, Professor McGonagall will ask which club sounded most appealing to you.

harry potter hogwarts mystery club selection

You can choose any of the clubs and, regardless of your choice, you can still level up your XP for the other 2 clubs as you will encounter differently-colored objects during future tasks.

After this, Professor McGonagall sends you off to your next class.

Lesson 1: Flipendo

Completion time: 3 hours

Stars to pass: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you have enough points, it’s recommended to pick either the second or third answers, as this will award you with 10 Attribute points compared to the first answer, which will only award you with 5.

Regardless of what you pick, Professor Flitwick will still teach you Flipendo. Aside from the usual tasks you need to do during lessons, Professor Flitwick will also ask you a question. Here’s one that you may encounter:

You also reveal to Rowan your plan for how to get past Mrs. Norris, unlock the gate, and fight off potential obstacles when you continue your investigation of the Cursed Vaults. As for the first part of your plan, you need to brew a Sleeping Draught. But instead of learning this from Professor Snape, who may get suspicious, you decide to recruit the help of Penny Haywood.

After going through some other details of the plan, you tell Rowan that you may need to bring along a third person to pull your plan off.

Tricking Filch will earn you 10 Knowledge points.

After a short conversation, Filch will leave, allowing you to access the corridor with Rowan and your friend of choice (Ben or Penny). Mrs. Norris is already standing guard. Generally, the plan is that your friend will keep watch, Rowan will give Mrs. Norris the Sleeping Draught, and you’ll use Alohomora to unlock the door.

Once Mrs. Norris is asleep, you’ll have to trace a shape to cast Alohomora.

The spell works but Merula appears out of nowhere and uses Flipendo on you and your friends. Apparently, she let you do all the work opening the door so she can find out what’s on the other side, which she is completely convinced is the Cursed Vault. Rowan asks you what you should do as Merula walks inside.

Choosing to save her will reward you with 10 Empathy points, which is the recommended route to take. If you don’t save Merula, one of your friends will and you won’t get a reward. Repeat the same activities as before to fill up your Star Meter.

You manage to free Merula but the door is still frozen shut. You’ll then ask the friend you brought along to help. Ben will cast Flipendo while Penny will use a strengthening solution to break the ice.

Once the door has been freed of ice, you will notice mysterious writings on the wall. Rowan will memorize this message before you all leave.

Merula, of course, doesn’t seem grateful, vowing to find the Cursed Vaults herself before walking away. You and Rowan suspect that what you encountered might not actually be a Cursed Vault, but you decide to get out of there before being caught by either Snape or Filch.
