Dr. Mario is one of those childhood games that everyone loves. That’s why it comes as no surprise that Dr. Mario World, the game’s reincarnation on the mobile platform, has quickly climbed to the top spot of Android and iOS puzzle games. Fans all over the world are thrilled to be able to obliterate viruses with colored pills. In this version, you get to choose who you want to play as. There’s Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and more. Each character has his own skill that can be activated in order to solve puzzles more quickly.
If you are confident in your virus-busting skills, you can test it against some of the best players from around the world in 1-on-1 showdowns. There are hundreds of levels to complete, each one more difficult than the last. Make sure you prepare for your adventures by reading our Dr. Mario World beginner’s guide to learn everything you need to know in order to complete all the levels in the game.
1. Try The Different Game Modes
There are two game modes available in Dr. Mario World: Stage and Versus. As the name suggests, Stage mode is where you clear stages one at a time. You are given a board of viruses that you must clear before all your capsules run out. If you use up all your capsules, or if your capsules can no longer the board from below, you fail the stage. Successfully clearing a stage will reward you with stars and battle points depending on the number of capsules you used.
The Versus mode is where you can fight against other players. You don’t really try to destroy each other here. You just clear puzzles alongside each other without using any hearts. The one who clears his board more efficiently wins. You can earn more battle points when you win Versus matches. The more battle points you have, the higher your rank will be. This in turn gets you more in-game rewards.
2. Choose The Right Doctor
As we mentioned before, there are several doctors available for you to play. Each one has a different skill, so make sure you choose carefully depending on the goals of each level. Skills might also vary depending on the game mode. The first three doctors available are Mario, Peach, and Bowser. Check out their skills below.
Mario: Clears 1 row in the lowest position in Stage mode. Clears the bottom one row in Versus.
Peach: Clears 1 random column in both Stage and Versus modes.
Bowser: Clears 2 random horizontal rows in Stage mode. Clears 1 random horizontal step in Versus mode.
Other doctors will be available through purchases. Make sure you check out their skills in order to determine the best use for them.
3. Hire Some Assistants
All doctors need assistants in order to function efficiently. In Dr. Mario World, you get to unlock your first Assistant by simply playing through the introductory stages. All subsequent Assistants, however, need to be unlocked by spending 4,000 coins in the shop. You’re also free to whip out your credit card if you want more Assistants right away. Just keep in mind that you won’t be able to choose who you unlock since the game utilizes a gacha system when unlocking both Doctors and Assistants.
Doctors can have up to two Assistants at a time. Each Assistant has a different effect that can boost your performance. For example, Goombas give out a 1% score boost in Stage mode and a 4% chance to fill up your attack meter instantly if your opponent attacks. Blooper, on the other hand, gives out a 10% chance of getting a single-color capsule in Stage mode, and a 20% chance of getting matching colors on your first four capsules in Versus.
4. Rotate Pills Before Moving
When a pill appears on the board and it isn’t in the correct position to match the virus, you can tap on it to rotate it. Make sure you rotate the pill before you drag it into position. This will ensure you have enough time to maneuver into place. Pills will start moving upwards as soon as you release it after dragging. That means if you drag before rotating, it might end up sticking to surface before you have the chance to move it into position.
5. No Need To Wait
After you rotate the pill into the correct position, you don’t need to wait for it to travel towards the virus. You can hurry things along by dragging the pill directly where you want it to go. In fact, there may be times when dragging is the only way you can get the pill into the correct position. Just make sure you analyze the entire board first before dragging the pills anywhere.
6. Half Pills Can Still Be Used
There are times when only half the pill was used to kill a virus. You will notice that the other half will stay on the board on its own. You can still use these floating half-pills if there is a matching virus on the board. Simply drag the half-pill the same way you would drag a full pill. Keep in mind, however, that it cannot be moved to a lower position if it’s already high up on the board. That means if you are going to use just the first half of a pill, make sure there will still be a virus that you can kill with the other half somewhere on the upper part of the board.
7. Save Your Pills
The number of pills per stage is like the number of moves you have remaining. That does not mean you should use them all up. The fewer pills you use to clear a stage, the higher your end score will be. This is the primary reason why you should be careful when using just half of a pill. Even if you don’t use the second half, it still counts as one full pill used when it comes to your score. Don’t leave unused half-pills around the board in order to maximize your score.
8. How To Manage Your Energy
Energy is needed in order to play in Stage mode. Once you are out of energy, you will need to wait for it to regenerate on its own. It takes half an hour to earn one energy. Even if you earn 16 energy during your 8-hour sleep, you will quickly burn through it all in less than an hour of gameplay. Make sure you get the most out of each energy point by carefully considering each move. If you run out of energy and want to keep playing, you can just go for Versus mode since there is no limit to the number of PvP matches per day.
9. Understand Each Stage’s Mechanics
The first 20 levels of the game are pretty straightforward, and you will probably breeze through them without putting much thought into it. Later stages, however, will be a lot more challenging. You need to pay attention to the different mechanics of each stage in order to progress. For example, if you are on a stage that has caged coins, you will need to pick up the coin that unlocks the cages first. If there is dust on a stage, you won’t be able to see the color of the virus underneath. Your best bet would be to plop down a test pill to see what happens.
10. Complete The Doctors’ Orders
Doctors’ Orders are the equivalent of quests in Dr. Mario World. These are different tasks that you need to accomplish while playing games. Completing orders will reward you with more coins. Make sure you regularly check the list of orders to see what you need to do. Don’t forget to collect your rewards for completed orders as well. Since each character draw in this game costs 4,000 coins, every little bit of extra income helps you inch closer towards unlocking all the staff members.
